Postpartum Recovery Tips: Healing Your Body and Embracing Your New Role

The postpartum period is a time of profound change, both physically and emotionally. As you adjust to life with your new baby, it’s essential to prioritize your own recovery as well. At Gentle Beginnings, we help you navigate your postpartum journey with care and grace to all the changes that come with expanding your family.

We provide expert postpartum care and are happy to share some practical tips to support your healing journey. Our goal is to help you feel more comfortable and confident as you step into this new chapter.

  1. Rest When You Can

Your body has just accomplished something incredible, and rest is key to recovery. While sleep may feel elusive in the early weeks, try to embrace rest wherever you can. This might mean lying down while your baby naps, asking a partner or loved one to take over for an hour, or simply closing your eyes when you have a quiet moment. Remember, rest doesn’t have to mean deep sleep — giving your body time to be still is equally valuable.

Some may say, “Prioritize rest, but be realistic.” We say, “Prioritize rest, we’ve got this.”

At Gentle Beginnings, we offer day and night services to allow you to rest, recover, and adjust to this new chapter of life.

  2. Nourish Your Body

Eating nutrient-dense foods can support your body as it heals. Focus on warm, easy-to-digest meals rich in protein, healthy fats, and vitamins. Foods like bone broth, oatmeal, cooked vegetables, and lean meats can provide the energy and nutrients you need. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from friends or family to prepare nourishing meals, or consider meal delivery services designed for postpartum parents.

We even offer light meal prep to support your nutrition needs as your body recovers. It is essential to fuel your body in a proper way and consider your nutritional needs, especially if you are breastfeeding.

  3. Embrace Gentle Movement

While rest is crucial, light movement can also promote recovery. Short walks, gentle stretching, or simple breathing exercises can improve circulation and help you feel more grounded. Be sure to listen to your body and only resume exercise when your healthcare provider gives you the green light.

  4. Support Your Pelvic Floor and Core

Your core and pelvic floor muscles worked hard during pregnancy and birth. Gentle strengthening exercises, such as pelvic tilts, diaphragmatic breathing, and guided core exercises, can help restore these muscles.

  5. Care for Your Perineum or C-Section Incision

After years of experience, we have learned a few tips and tricks for the recovery process. If you had a vaginal birth, use warm sitz baths, peri bottles, and witch hazel pads to soothe your perineum. For those who delivered via C-section, follow your provider's instructions for keeping your incision clean and dry. Avoid heavy lifting and be mindful of your body's signals as you heal.

For general recovery after any type of birth, it is best for you to rest. Give yourself some grace and allow the natural healing process to work its magic. At Gentle Beginnings, we strive to help you confidently navigate caring for your body after the beautiful process it endured.

  6. Ask for and Accept Help

Recovering from birth requires support. Whether it's emotional reassurance, help with household chores, or guidance in caring for your newborn, reaching out for help can make a world of difference. Postpartum doulas offer personalized support to ensure you feel cared for during this transition.

  7. Embrace Emotional Healing

Postpartum emotions can be intense and unpredictable. Processing your birth experience, connecting with loved ones, and seeking professional support when needed can all contribute to emotional well-being. We are here to actively listen and encourage your emotional healing.
