Hospital Bag Checklist — What You'll Actually Use

Every hospital bag checklist on the internet has roughly 47 items on it, half of which you will not touch. I know this because I have supported families through a lot of births and postpartum stays, and I have watched a lot of carefully packed bags go almost entirely unused. So here is my honest, experience-based version. The things you will actually reach for. Pack your bag by 36 weeks not 39.

FOR YOU:

The things you'll definitely use:

- Your own pillow from home (hospital pillows are not comfortable)

- A robe — you will wear this constantly, it's easier than a gown, and you'll want it for skin-to-skin

- Slip-on slippers or flip flops (you will not want to bend down to tie anything)

- Comfortable underwear — either your own or disposable mesh (the hospital provides mesh, but having your own feels better)

- Nipple cream — even if you're not sure you'll breastfeed, bring it

- Your phone charger and a long cord

- Snacks — real snacks, not crackers — for labor and for after

- A lip balm (the air in hospitals is very dry)

- Your own toiletries — shampoo, face wash, dry shampoo, whatever makes you feel human

- Comfortable, loose coming-home outfit (higher waisted than you think — you will be tender)

- A hair tie or headband, if you have longer hair

Nice to have:

- A small bluetooth speaker for labor

- Nursing bra or sleep bra (one or two)

- Your own birth preferences printed out — not because the hospital won't read them, but because having them in your hand helps you advocate for yourself

- A going-home outfit for the baby (newborn size, not 0-3 — and bring a backup size in case)

FOR YOUR PARTNER OR SUPPORT PERSON:

- Change of clothes (plan for at least one night)

- Their own snacks — labor can be long and hospital cafeterias close

- Phone charger

- Cash or card for the vending machine at 3am

- Entertainment for the slow parts of labor

- Comfortable shoes — they'll be on their feet a lot

WHAT TO LEAVE AT HOME:

- Your laptop (you will not be working)

- The fancy pajamas you bought for photos (bring them if you want, but you'll likely be in a hospital gown)

- Anything you'd be upset about losing or getting stained

- Your full skincare routine

WHAT THE HOSPITAL PROVIDES THAT YOU DON'T NEED TO BRING:

- Mesh underwear (take extras home — seriously)

- Pads

- Peri bottle (also take this home)

- Diapers and wipes for the baby during your stay

- Swaddle blankets

- A hat for the baby

- Dermoplast or similar pain relief spray — ask for it if they don't offer it

ONE MORE THING:

Pack your postpartum recovery supplies at home before you leave for the hospital, so they're ready when you get back. Peri bottle, extra pads, nipple cream, Tucks pads, comfortable clothes, snacks within reach of wherever you'll be feeding. Coming home should feel like arriving somewhere prepared, not scrambling. If you want to go through your full hospital prep and postpartum plan together — what to pack, what to set up at home, what to expect in those first days — that's exactly what my prenatal consultations cover. We'll make sure you're ready for what comes after the birth, not just the birth itself.
